For those of us that don’t particularly care about having clean-shaven faces all the time, this is certainly a great time to be alive!
Having facial hair doesn’t automatically make you seen as unkempt and a slob anymore.
In fact, many celebrities and male models are sporting a handsome, rugged look these days that is attractive and well-maintained at the same time. If you would like to look just as good, having stubble is a great way to go about it.
Before you adopt your new stubbly look, ask yourself if you want to commit to it. Maintaining an even stubble takes as much time and dedication as any other grooming style, so if you don’t have the patience for it then this isn’t for you.
On the other hand, if you don’t mind putting the time in, and especially if you are sensitive to regular shaving, read on.
The first important step to a healthy stubble is its shape. Browse the web for pictures of scruffy styles, settle on one you enjoy and then shape your facial hair accordingly. This means that you have to clearly define your stubble’s border by clean shaving around it and eliminating stray hairs that pop up from time to time. On the other hand, you’ll want to go for a natural look so don’t overdo it.
As far as the actual length of the stubble goes, it varies depending on facial structure and your ability to grow a beard, but the general consensus is that it should be between 3 and 5 mm long.
Before you start shaping your stubble, wash your face with a good facial scrub to get rid of dead skin cells and lift your beard’s hair. Then apply shaving oil or gel to soften the hair up. Finally, use either a safety razor or, better yet, a beard trimmer to shape your beard.
You should keep most of the stubble at the bottom third of your face. This makes it look cleaner and more pronounced. Making sure that the neckline is maintained and neat is important as well. Shaving the neck with a safety razor is the way to go.
Once that is taken care of, you’ll need to maintain the stubble at its current size. A beard trimmer is great for this as well because it has removable blade guards that make it easier to choose a length and stick with it.
Since it takes more time to notice growth / thickening of already grown hair, you won’t need to maintain the stubble every day. The same can’t be said for the parts of your face which are supposed to have no hair on them at all, so make sure that you shave these spots daily.
Finally, wash the stubble whenever you wash your entire face. This will prevent potential odours from lingering on it. If you use some kind of moisturising cream, feel free to apply that as well. It will keep the hair soft and make contact with it more enjoyable.
